Bovine semen handing and thawing procedures

10-10-2024

Some useful and practical tips:

Always identify the semen needed with the tank inventory card to avoid excess time lifting canister.

Never lift the canister above the frost line in the neck of the tank. If the straw is not identified within 10 seconds, lower the canister back into liquid nitrogen for at least 10 seconds before it up again.

Use appropriate tweezers to pick the straw from the cane, instead of fingers.

We recommend thawing only one straw at a time in the objective to use it for insemination within 5 minutes from thawing.

Prepare a water bath daily, using clean water, at a temperature of 35C to 37C with a thermometer.

Take the straw out of the cane. Transfer the straw into the water bath for thawing for 30 seconds to no longer than 5 minutes.

Remove the straw from the water bath and use a paper towel to dry the straw. Always protect it from cold wind, sunlight and keep it in a clean environment.

Place the thawed straw in the AI gun with the plugged end first.

With clean scissor or straw cutter, cut the sealed end of the straw at 90 degrees.

Place a plastic sheath over the loaded AI gun. Ensure that the straw enters and fits tight inside the tip of the sheath.

We recommend using a doble sheath (sanitary sheath) on the top of the AI gun sheath.

Inseminate one complete straw per heifer/cow, do not split straws.
